What Is Love?

There was a famous song back in the 90s called “What is Love” by Haddaway. I think it was made even more popular by this movie where two guys would drive around town going to different night clubs bobbing their head from side to side jamming really…REALLY hard (Don’t act like you’ve never seen this movie lol). The song had a very catchy beat and an equally catchy hook, which was basically ‘What is Love’? I recently watched this movie the other day and heard this song and it got me thinking…what IS love? I mean really, what does it mean to love someone? Do we really know what love is? Most of the time its treated like a common cold with symptoms that are just as bad. And you can’t wait to get better and be over it. But I believe love is a beautiful thing if we really know what it is and what it means to love!

So I was reading my Bible this morning and I came across a scripture that I’m pretty sure I had read times before, but it really stood out to me today. It was in 1 John 4:16,

“16 And so we know and rely on the love God has for us.

God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.”

The part in this verse that really stuck out to me was the latter half. “God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them”. Whoa!!! Wait a minute!!! You mean to tell me that the answer to one of the most complicated, frustrating, stressful, mind boggling questions in human history is simply….. God? (Mind BLOWN!!!). I mean seriously, reading that just blew me away this morning. We’ve all asked the question ‘What is Love’? We’ve all tried to come up with our own conclusions to what true love is. People have written countless songs about falling in love, falling out of love, hating love. There has been plays, movies, shows, dedicated purely to love and what its all about. And the simple answer is that, “God is love”.

So what does that mean? Ok so God is love, but how does that explain what it is? How does that translate into how it makes me feel or what it makes me do? Well when I read that scripture it made me realize that I can’t even begin to understand love until I understand God. You see love is not a feeling, or an emotion that can be turned on or off depending on the situation. Love is actually a somebody. And that somebody happens to be the creator of the universe. When we begin to learn the essence of God we’re learning the essence of love. When we get to know God we start to know love. 1 John 4:8 says,

“Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love”.

This means that if you do not know God you’ll never know what true love is. You will never know how to love properly because you don’t know Love. You don’t know God. Love is sacrifice, which is what God did for us when he gave his one and only son. This was an example of how we are to love others. Not just with words, not just with warm fuzzy feelings or emotions but with sacrifice. Love is always about the other person and never about yourself. When you see that God himself is not selfish but selfless you understand that love is also selfless. So many relationships, friendships, and family members have a falling out because they never knew God. So many marriages have ended in divorce because they didn’t understand that love is about sacrifice and not our own selfish needs. When you realize that true love can only be accomplished through the knowing of God, only then will you love the way that we were created to love. When we lean on our own understanding of how to love or what love is, we will fail every time. Since Love is a somebody, in order to know that somebody you have to treat it like any other relationship you want to form. You have to get to know Love. How can you be in Love if you know nothing about Him? If you’ve never learned who Love is, what He’s done, what His likes and dislike are, then how can you “live in Love”? The only way to know who Love is, is to know who God is. Once you start there you will begin to understand how to love, who to love, when to love, where to love, why to love and most importantly…what is love.

“What is Love”? Well the answer is simple dear brother Haddaway. “…God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.”

I hoped this post helped anybody who has struggled with the concept of love and trying to grasp what it is really about. 1. Wow this is awesome! This reminds me of when I have a tuff time trying to love other people, I like to take a step back and think and ask God how he loves them and why. Then I pray for his eyes so that I may be able to see others the way he does! Also from reading this blog it sounds similar to forgiveness. Forgiveness isn’t for the other person but it’s for me. So loving people in the way that God or Christ does is more beneficial to me than to not love!

  2. Right on point Brandon. Not loving God and experiencing it will cause you to be selfish. You never learn that true unconditional love. So many Christian marriages fail because they never developed a real loving relationship with Christ. If they did, they would not be so quick to throw in the towel. If God threw in the towel every time we messed up, we would be in big trouble!! Our relationships should reflect what the Fruit of The Spirits says in Galatians 5:23-23; show love, have joy in your life, stop stressing and have peace; forbearance, meaning bear with me when I mess up, pray for me, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control; just because it feels good, does not mean it’s good for you.
